About the Group

“Putting the World to Rights” – a tall order, even for Keyworth U3A members?
Not at all – this interest group has taken on the task and our meetings have shown that differing opinions and fresh points of view can be exchanged and appreciated in a friendly atmosphere.  This is what PTWR is all about – sharing experiences, opinions and understanding while having our own ideas challenged.

Our numbers have continued to grow, albeit slightly, and we still have a warm welcome ready for any new debaters – our meetings are held in the Parochial Church Hall on the 2nd Monday of each month starting at 2pm but please note with holiday commitments there will be no meeting in July 2012.

At each meeting one of our group presents a short introduction and informed background to a new topic, after which members offer views and have healthy discussions on the subject in question.  Being a mixed group of varying backgrounds, gender and experiences, our debates are wide ranging in views and opinions which creates a good atmosphere which can be challenging but is never aggressive.

Looking at our recent subjects, Media - Gossip or News;  Consumerism – a necessary evil;  Re-introduction of National Service and most recently Multiculturalism – has it worked? you can imagine we don’t always agree with each other.  But this is what PTWTR is all about, good positive debate and lively discussion carried out with a light hearted approach.

In our debate, for example, when discussing Re-introduction of National Service, one person’s National Service for one’s Country is another person’s 2 years loss of youth! The PTWTR session opens up the arguments for and against and explores the pros and cons of the subject.  With so many interesting areas yet for us to address over the coming months we look forward to some exciting and rewarding Monday afternoons.  At our next session on 11th June, we will be looking at the somewhat, dare I say it, ‘explosive’ subject of Nuclear Power – now there’s something to ponder on!  Any views?
