Wildlife and Conservation
About the GroupWe’re a group of people who are interested in all aspects of wildlife and conservation. Some of us are very knowledgeable, most of us less so, but we’re all keen to learn more.
In the winter months we meet in the Centenary Lounge at 2pm on the 4th Friday of the month, when we have talks on a range of interesting topics. Recent topics have included birds in the local area, insects and marine life and conservation. We charge £2 per head to cover the cost of room hire and refreshments. We also make donations to a charity of the speaker’s choice eg RSPB, Friends of Rushcliffe Country Park, Marine Conservation Society.
In the summer months our meetings take the form of field trips to sites of interest, often accompanied by a talk from an expert. We’ve been to Attenborough Nature Reserve, St Anns allotments, Skylarks Nature Reserve and Rutland Water to name a few. Sometimes there is a specific cost to the trip and for others we make a voluntary donation to the relevant charity. We organise car sharing so you don’t need to have your own transport. These visits may take place on the 4th Friday of the month but may not always, as we have to fit in with the different venues.
As we don’t always have a regular meeting time, we keep in touch by email. Those members who don’t have email are usually ‘buddied up’ to someone who keeps them informed.
