22 Dec 2013Who were the Cathars?
Vic Taylor, Heraldry Group leader, reports that the Medieval Heresy and Dissent Research Network at the University of Nottingham is pleased to invite you to its launch event, a free public lecture by Professor R. I. Moore entitled ‘Who were the Cathars?’ The lecture runs from 5.00pm-7.00pm on Wednesday 29th January 2014. It will be preceded by a complementary wine reception at 4.00pm. 04 Dec 2013Next year’s National U3A event at the Royal Institution is entitled 'The U3A Explores Science at the Ri'.which will take place on Monday 24th March 2014.
The dates of next year's National Summer Schools are Monday 14th July to Thursday 17th July 2014, at Harper Adams University, and Monday 18th August to Thursday 21st August 2014 at the Royal Agricultural University.

02 Oct 2013Barbara Lewis, Chairman of the Third Age Trust, has emailed that the Leeds University based FutureLearn offers U3As the opportunity to use FutureLearn's free online courses as a great resource to start new study groups. FutureLearn are offering a short two-week (4 hours) course on conservation, but hurry, it begins on 21st October 2013. For more information see Barbara's email which is in the Notices section.
01 Oct 2013Starting in November a second (and possibly final) Memory Workshop is to be held and there are 2 places left. There is a pre-course seminar on the afternoon of Friday 25th October followed by four consecutive Friday afternoon workshops starting on 15th November. 09 Sep 2013Would you like to know what the Science, Technology and Research Group are doing? Group leader Chris Mason has produced a very interesting first newsletter which can be found on the group webpage.
On Thursday October 17th the group set out on their first Site Visit to Jodrell Bank to learn about how Britain leads the race in Radio Astronomy, and have an opportunity to see the famous Radio Telescope.
If anyone in the U3A wants to go on this visit there are still a small number of places left (at the time of writing) at a cost of £20. You can get vouchers from either Ros Jones 937-5359 or Chris Mason 846-0821.

26 Aug 2013From 17th September a Computer Help Centre will be running on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays from 10.00am to 12.00 in the Methodist Hall. At the launch meeting on 17th people can explain what they would like to get out of the sessions and discuss
how it can be achieved. The more people who come along and express their views,

Photography Group starts on Tuesday, 10th September 2013 and every 2nd Tuesday of the month 2.00 p.m. in the Methodist Church Hall, Keyworth. This a group for anyone who wants to produce really pleasing photographs, it is NOT a ‘techie’ Group and it doesn’t matter what sort of camera you use – just use it to full advantage! Dad's Army - Tolethorpe Hall
U3A members and non members are welcome to join the New Horizons trip on 10th August to Tolethorpe Hall, nr. Stamford to see the production of Dad's Army. 11 May 2013The University of Nottingham Medical School wishes to investigate the potential health benefits of a particular type of apple that is not on the market in the UK. This relatively new breed of apple appears to be rich in particular flavonoids that may help to improve cardiovascular health and we are looking to recruit to our study healthy male and female subjects aged between 50-70 years.
The study involves non-invasive assessment of cardiovascular function at rest (no exercise) and would entail a screening visit (that could be conducted on the phone) and three 4 hour visits to QMC. Full information in the Notices section.

The Drivetime Choir Friday 14th June offers the unique opportunity to sing in a huge chorus with the world-renowned Hallé Orchestra in the Nottingham Royal Concert Hall. Would you help with some Information Technology Research?
Researchers from the University of Nottingham, in collaboration with the University of Cambridge, are looking for people over the age of 65 to participate in a study looking at how to make the learning to use ICT (Information and Communication Technology) easier. The study will be run at the University of Nottingham University Park campus. Full information in the Notices section.

The first meeting of the Desert Island Discs group will be held the on Monday 29th April (not Monday 6th May as previously advertised, which is a Bank Holiday).
20 Mar 2013On Monday 18th March the U3A Keyworth Village Quiz team defeated the Local History Society in the quarter finals. As a result they now compete on finals night Monday 25th March (when both the semi finals and finals take place). Please support them if you can (7.30pm in the Village Hall). The March edition of the East Midlands 'News Bites' publication, prepared by the Regional Education and Development Officer Liz Wilson, is now available on the Association of East Midlands U3As website.
Desert Island Discs. The idea for Keyworth & District U3A’s newest group is based on the famous radio programme. Group members are asked to bring along a recording of a favourite disc and are invited to briefly share with the group why it’s special to them. It will meet between 2pm-4pm at the Methodist Church Hall on the first Monday of the month commencing in May. For more information follow the link to read the Desert Island Discs poster.

Prof. Christopher Miles is a leading expert on D H Lawrence and a film director. On Tuesday 19th March 2013 at the Leicester Phoenix Film Theatre there is a unique opportunity to hear him and to see his work. The programme includes a showing of the film ‘Priest of Love’, and an illustrated lecture from Prof. Miles on directing films about Lawrence’s life and work. Prof. Miles directed “Priest of Love’ and the adaptation of ‘Virgin and the Gypsy. More information on the Notts Network of U3As website.
