Short Walk - 16.12.14: As we will not be walking this month Sheila and Bill have kindly invited group members to their home for Coffee and Mince Pies at 10.30am on the day. Please note that New Horizons has had to cancel the Masonic Hall visit on 13th November because of the illness of Bill Lawrenson who was to lead the tour, hopefully NH will rearrange in 2015.  Refunds will be available to members at the next Open Meeting.

Paul Roebuck is to lead a NEW MAHJONG GROUP which will be held on the 4th Thursday of the month at his home at 2.00pm starting on the 27th of November. You don’t need to know how to play. Please contact Paul on 0115 937 6636.

The Cinema Club arrangement was suspended during the alterations to the Broadway Cinema.  It has now restarted with a new start time of 1.00pm and an increase in price to 3.50. To mark the centenary of the start of WW1, the World War I History Group gathered at the Memorial Gates to the Rectory Field on the 4th August  this year and members recited poems or contributed readings, some of which were dedicated to relatives or local residents who gave their lives in this “War to end all wars”.   An anthology has been compiled which can be read on the WW1 History webpage.  Chris Close.

domeU3A Family History Conference - Another Outstanding Success.
On Saturday 13th September 2014, 230 delegates travelled to the beautiful Dome building in Buxton for this event and were treated to a very professional mix of lectures on all forms and histories of genealogy.  More information in this report.

WW1 - Radcliffe Remembers - August 2nd - 10th 2014
A team from Radcliffe U3A has spent the past 18 months researching the impact of the First World War on the village and its families. Using many sources, including census returns, military records, parish registers, directories and family documents.

An Exhibition will be held at Royal British Legion, Main Road, Radcliffe on Trent. Open on the 2nd from 2 to 6pm, and all other days from 10.30am to 6.00pm . FREE - come along.  For full details go to www.radcliffeontrentww1.org.uk.

Science, Technology and Research (STAR).
There is no meeting in May.  On Monday 2nd June Paul Roebuck will be giving a presentation entitled 'Rocks and Minerals'. Paul is an Inorganic Chemist by Profession and he will display a series of minerals, rocks and fossils categorised by their chemical composition. Paul will show and speak of what amounts to just a small sample of his very impressive selection of exhibits that he has been collecting since the early 1970s.
The group are planning a visit to "The Deep" Submarium (Hull) on 3rd June and are making places available to ALL K&D U3A members whether in the STAR group or not. Vouchers are 22 per head and will be on sale at the next two open meetings on 22nd April and on 27th May. The current STAR group programme is on the STAR Group webpage.  Chris Mason.

The East Midlands U3As Regional Conference 2014 is to be held on Tuesday 15th July at Trent College, Long Eaton, Nottingham.  Conference poster and booking form are on the East Midlands U3As website.

New Horizons - The National Memorial Arboretum - Monday 12th May
We have additional capacity on the coach for members who would rather do their own thing.  We are able to offer “coach only” travel to and from the the National Memorial grounds for a mere 8.50!  Depart Village Hall 9:15am. Depart Arboretum 3pm.

New Horizons
Please join us on Wednesday 9th April at 6:30pm for  a "Guts and Gore" walk around Nottingham's Lace Market.  Mr. Ezekiel Bone of The Royal Centre fame will be our guide on a tour that lasts approximately 2 hours with a drinks stop en route. Currently the Cinema Group will not be offering any movies on the usual monthly basis. The Broadway Cinema is not able to let us rent a screen room as we usually do because of plans for alterations and redecoration.  It is unlikely to re-start for some time, maybe September 2014.  Brenda Parsons

FutureLearn
On 2nd October there was a news item about FutureLearn, with Barbara Lewis, Chairman of the Third Age Trust encouraging us  to use their free online courses.
The course Sustainability, society and you is the first free online course run by The University of Nottingham as part of the new venture with FutureLearn. The eight week course will explore the small steps we can take to make a real impact on the world around us.
The course is led by Dr Sarah Speight, an archaeologist, educator and The University of Nottingham’s academic lead on sustainability.  Follow the above link for full information.
