Keyworth u3a Christmas Social 17th December 2024
We filled the Village Hall with 120
members, with entertainment provided by Trevor Leeson. A 75 question quiz was
prepared by Debbie Boote and prizes were given out. A glass of wine accompanied
by a mince pie sent everyone on their way after an enjoyable afternoon.
Open Coffee Morning, Saturday 5th October 2024
A well attended Open Coffee Morning for both u3a members and prospective members was held in Keyworth Village Hall on 5th October. Tables were set out in the Hall for Group Leaders to display information about their activities, thereby enabling anyone interested to find out more. A number of prospective members did decide to join.
“Pimms on the Rec” 23rd July 2024
Bearing in mind our disappointingly chilly and wet early summer, it was a real act of faith to arrange an outdoor event for Tuesday 23rd July. Luckily the weather was kind to us and our “Pimms on the Rec” went ahead as planned immediately following our usual monthly meeting. As can be seen from the photographs, a good time was had by all, and before the end there was unanimous approval to hold similar occasions in future.
Keyworth Show 6th July 2024
The day of the Keyworth Show began a bit chilly and damp with few visitors, but then the clouds cleared away allowing the sun to come out, and the crowds poured on to the Rec. Once again the Show was a real community event, and many visitors came to ask about our u3a.
Taylor's Loughborough Bell Foundry
In October 2023 a group of seventeen members and a visitor journeyed into Loughborough to visit Taylor's Bell Foundry. We were taken on an extensive tour of the Foundry in our high-vis jackets, and learnt about its beginnings in the 19th. century. Prior to the Foundry finding a permanent home in what was previously a cherry orchard, it had been in a peripatetic existence - workers moving from location to location as required to cast bells across the country. Since incorporation Taylor's has cast over 26000 bells for locations across the globe, and is one of very few remaining foundries in Europe.
St. Anne's Allotments
In June 2023 a group of members visited the St.Anne’s Allotments for a guided tour by Paul who is a very knowledgeable member of the charity. The history of the allotment gardens goes back 700 years when scrubland began to be allocated to burgesses of the town (as it was then), when they all lived within the town’s walls. The gardens have had a continuous history since then.
Framework Knitters Museum
In April 2023, 15 of us visited the Framework Knitters Museum in Ruddington. We were shown an informativeshort film and then split into groups to visit in rotation the Framework Knitters shed, the workers'
cottages, and the area where circular knitting was demonstrated. This museum has been renovated
since Covid, and all of us thoroughly enjoyed our time with the highly enthusiastic and energetic
volunteer staff

Sarsfields Chocolaterie and Cafe
In February 2023 21 of us met for afternoon tea at Sarsfields Chocolaterie and Cafe (Hickling Lane, Kinoulton). Some of us partook of a demonstration and hands-on attempt at tempering chocolate - this is the process of creating the right crystal structure to allow setting. The picture shows one of the party having a go! It looked very easy when Jerome (the chocolatier) did it.....
Croquet
In September 2023, 16 members participated in a fun afternoon learning the basics of croquet at theNottingham Croquet club on the University of Nottingham campus. We had a bit of tuition on how to hold
the mallets and aim properly, and then practised in a fun game of croquet skittles, before getting down to
a few games of golf croquet. The weather was pretty good to us, with only one major short downpour
forcing us into the shelters! Many thanks to the lovely volunteers from the club who gave their time to
make this a super afternoon out.
